5 Old Age Health Freaks

Apparently age is just a number, especially when it comes to keeping a healthy body. The following 5 inspirational and active people have obviously stocked up on vitamins, done their stretches and taken old age on head first. After looking at these 5, there’s simply no excuse not to shape up.

Bette Calman

For the past 40 years, Bette Calman has been tying herself in knots on a regular basis as a result of her devotion to the discipline known as yoga. The extremely healthy, 83yr old Australian is such an expert on the subject that she has so far written 3 yoga books and for 33 years of her life ran a number of yoga centres throughout Australia. Bette says, “Forget age. Yoga keeps you young”.

Ray Moon

At 80 years old, Ray Moon is easily one of the world’s oldest competing bodybuilders, and as recently as September 2008, Moon took part in the Victorian Bodybuilding Championships in Melbourne where he competed against muscle-bound athletes over a decade younger than him. But it’s not been an easy journey. On his way to the top, Ray has had to overcome polio, open-heart surgery and prostate problems.

Ladislav Nicek

92yr old Ladislav Nicek has been competing in the annual Winter Swimming Championships in the Vlatva River for over half a century, and has until this point only missed a few events. Up to 70 ‘otuzilci’ (hardy fellows) brave the icy waters in an event which attracts a huge amount of media coverage, a large percentage due to the efforts of Mr. Nicek. He even organises the event every year before jumping in himself.

Buster Martin

Assuming claims regarding his age are true, 103yr old Buster Martin is the oldest person ever to participate in a marathon following his incredible effort last year, aged 101. Although the press reported that Buster had completed the race in 10 hours, official results only show his times for 5km, 10km and 15km. Unrelated to running; Buster famously fought off three attackers in 2007 whilst walking to a bus stop after a night in the pub. After staggering to the local hospital following the assault, Buster even turned up for work the next morning.

Eric Doughty

This year’s World Masters Games will be held in Sydney on the 10th October, and for one competitor it will be a personal triumph above most. Eric Doughty is 88 years of age and began cycling when just 13, however two years ago he had a pacemaker fitted and had to fight his way back to fitness. Then, last Novemeber, Eric went into hospital again, but this time for a triple bypass. This still hasn’t deterred him from training for the Games by competing in 3 cycling events over the course of a week. Obviously, he expects to win medals.
